SECURITY MARKET:

  • More than 2/3 of businesses reported one or more computer security incident in the last year.  Of those that were able to estimate costs, the average loss per company was $167,713.  (CSI/ FBI Computer Crime & Security Incident, July 2006)
  • Overall, the cost of security breaches to UK organizations is up by roughly 50% since two years ago, and cost around $10 billion pounds per year.  (PricewaterhouseCooper, Information Security Breaches Survey 2006)
  • The worldwide cost impact of malware attacks in 2005 was $14.2 billion.  (Computer Economics, 2005 Malware Report, January 2006)

PHISHING:

  • 51% of the top Global Financial Institutions suffered from successful phishing attacks in the previous 12 months.  (2006 Global Security Survey, Deloitte & Touche)

VIRUSES and MALWARE:

  • Although 97% of organizations surveyed had deployed anti-virus and firewalls, 65% suffered from virus attacks, costing the organizations $50,132 on average.  (CSI/ FBI Computer Crime & Security Survey, July 2006)
  • According to the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), at the point when they see new malicious code, the most popular brands of anti-virus on the market have an 80% miss rate. This is because cybercriminals are creating and testing their strains to ensure they will bypass the popular anti-virus solutions.  (ZD Net Australia, July 2006)

SPYWARE:

  • Spyware is costing businesses almost $350 a year per PC in administrative and help-desk expenses, estimates the Radicati Group.  (Newsweek, August 5, 2005)
  • 88% of business professionals detected spyware on their networks in the past 12 months.  (ITtoolbox, 2005)
  • 49% of PCs from North American businesses had moderate-to-severe infestations of adware, spyware, and other malware.  (Data from 90,000 desktops and servers, representing over 200 organizations from the US and Canada, SoftChoice, June 2006)
  • Spyware rakes in an estimated $2 billion a year in revenue, or about 11% of all Internet ad business, says the research firm IT-Harvest.  (The Plot to Hijack Your Computer, BusinessWeek Online, July 17, 2006).

KEYLOGGERS:

  • More than 2,200 Oregon taxpayers' identities were stolen by a keylogging Trojan horse that infected a state PC after an Oregon Department of Revenue worker browsed porn sites.  (Porn-surfing Oregon Worker Exposes 2,200 Taxpayer IDs, TechWeb, June 15, 2006)
  • Almost 1 in 5 (17%) have had employees launch a keylogger within their network.  (Harris Interactive, Websense Web@Work 2006) 

BOTS:

  • Bots are on the rise—nearly 20% of IT decision-makers indicated that they have had employees’ work-owned computers or laptops become infected with a bot.  (Harris Interactive, Websense Web@Work 2006)

MOBILE STORAGE DEVICES:

  • Almost three-quarters (73%) of IT decision-makers report employees have used a portable hard drive, such as a USB device, to download information.  (Harris Interactive, Websense Web@Work 2006)
